There is no better way to sample the south than to visit Jackson, Mississippi. Jackson is the capitol of and largest city in the state. It is also the hub of State and Federal government and is located in Northeast Hinds County. Located at the heart of the "Hospitality State", the City of Jackson is steeped in history, music, performing arts, sports and the truly Southern way of life. It is easy to see why so many call this the "City with Soul".
~ Jackson History
First settled in 1792 by French-Canadian trader Louis LeFleur, Jackson real estate was primarily a trading post during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Originally known as Parkerville, Jackson was made the capital of the State primarily for its central location.
Peter Van Dorn planned the city in a checkerboard pattern that was a favorite of Thomas Jefferson's. This alternated city blocks with parks and other open spaces, giving it a checkerboard feel. However, the city has changed over the years and has not retained the original checkerboard quality.
In 1839, residents of Jackson real estate saw to the passing of the first law to allow married women to own and administer to their own property. Because Jackson is not on the Mississippi River, it developed through railways rather than waterways. Jackson remained a small town until the 1970s, when large-scale growth occurred.
Today, Jackson is home to several different industries, including: electrical equipment and machinery, processed food and primary and fabricated metal products. The area surrounding Jackson is made up primarily of agricultural development of livestock, soybeans, cotton and poultry.
~ Jackson Education
The Jackson School System is made up of both public and private schools. The public school system is operated by the Jackson Public School District and the Hinds County School District. There are 40 elementary schools, 11 middle schools, nine high schools, a Career Academic Placement Program, a Capital City Alternative School, a Youth Court School, one school for the blind and one school for the deaf public schools operating in Jackson real estate.
Jackson also has a wonderful private school system that offers 35 different educational progras to choose from. For those that think "outside the box", the New Summit School is a non-traditional accredited school designed similar to traditional schools, with emphasis placed on keeping classrooms small and considering the individual needs of the students.
Jackson real estate is the home to Jackson State University, Millsaps College, Belhaven College and the University of Mississippi School of Medicine, Health Sciences and Dental School. Clinton is the home of Mississippi College. Mississippi College also operates the Mississippi College School of Law in downtown Jackson.
